Softball Takes on Saint Leo at Home

The Sharks Swept the Lions a season ago.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team (13-18, 2-10 SSC) is back at home this weekend as they take on the Saint Leo Lions (23-13, 3-3 SSC), Friday, March 22, at the AD Griffin Sports Complex. The teams will complete their three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.

NSU is looking to bounce back after being swept at Barry last weekend, losing 6-1 on Friday, then falling, 5-1 and 3-1, on Saturday.

Despite a slow start to the season, the Sharks have had big wins at home, including a 9-1 mercy-rule beating of the then No. 8 Rollins Tars and most recently, a 5-2 win over Eckerd, which was led by a walk-off home run in extra innings from Shelby Talon (Fr., Boynton Beach, Fla.).

The Sharks have been dependent on the pitching of Jennie Von Doellen (Jr., Hudson Bay, Canada), who is second in the conference in strikeouts, with 136, and leads the conference in innings pitched, with 153.1. The next highest amount in innings pitched by any player in the conference is 109.1.

Talon is currently sitting third in the conference with four home runs, while Laura Saladrigas (Sr., Hollywood, Fla.) is second in the SSC in doubles and triples.

Saint Leo is entering Friday after beating Kutztown, 2-1, and Minnesota Duluth, 4-0, earlier this week, before being swept by Palm Beach Atlantic last weekend.

Sarah Steiner has led the charge for the Saint Leo offense, hitting .353, with two home runs this season.

The two teams enter this weekend’s series nearly even when it comes to the overall series head-to-head record. Out of the 43 meetings between the Sharks and the Lions, Saint Leo holds the slight edge, with a 22-21 record over NSU.

The Sharks, however, have had the upper hand against the Lions in recent years. Since the 2009 season NSU has won 10 of the last 12 against the Lions.
